If you are following my blog, then you are aware of my decision to go into business for myself. It might be the a little narcissistic, but I have decided to set my mini-me on the same path to becoming an entrepreneur. She is me in so many ways! she is just a smaller version. She is challenging me every step of the way! why, oh why can she not just accept my opinions on this matter?! She is only six years old after all. She does not like the name I chose for her brand; she has ideas about the scents she wants to use, and the colors. I absolutely admire her leadership qualities but as a parent it is exhausting. She is making executive decisions, cool! I can get behind that. As parents we want to encourage our kids to be the best version of themselves. We want to raise leaders and innovators of their generation.
Our children are our legacies and our gift to the world, and we want to make sure we leave something exceptional behind, at least I do. But you must be careful raising exceptional children because you do not want to squash those qualities that make them exceptional. Unfortunately we cannot allow them to run completely unchecked with their passions. In my case my daughter is a bit of a termagant! She is demanding, opinionated, and outspoken. I think she is awesome but annoying! In a loving way of course…

Getting back to the business at hand which is making lip gloss. This is the product she decided she wants to make. I think it is a great idea, it is low cost and easy to make for a six-year-old. I tried to get her to think critically about why the name she chose for her brand would not work; I also gave her all the clues to come to her own decision. I should mention Sydney is a head strong gal and I think she purposefully did not get this lesson; she tends to dig her heels in just on principle. What followed this lesson in critical thinking was a negotiation, and you have give a little to get a little!
I am obviously the more experienced negotiator here, so I gave nothing and got everything I wanted. I probably should not have taken advantage, but I got what I wanted, and she does not feel forced into something she did not agree with. She happily agreed to my branding idea because the task I gave her was equally important. She got to choose what she wants her lip gloss to smell like. It is a win win for both of us.
